What is an Education Foundation?
An education foundation is a community-based, privately funded, non-profit organization that funds public education initiatives through grants. Education foundations provide schools with another source of funding beyond what is provided by state and local government resources to pilot new ideas. Many communities in Massachusetts and across the nation have active education foundations.
Who supports the Bourne Education Foundation?
Individuals including parents, grandparents, alumni, community members and educators support the BEF through individual donations and community fundraising. Businesses, corporations and larger foundations are also providing support for the BEF.
What is BEF’s relationship with the Bourne School District?
The BEF is an independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization. In keeping with its mission the BEF is intended to enhance rather than replace funding for the Bourne School District budget.
Who can apply for a Foundation grant?
Any Bourne School District employee is eligible and encouraged to apply for a grant. Community members are also able to partner with an educator to apply for a grant.
Who decides which projects to fund?
The BEF board votes on recommendations made by its Grants Committee. Grant criteria favor projects that augment and enhance the educational experience. These projects will not typically be funded by taxpayers’ dollars and are outside the scope of the Bourne School District budget.
What accountability is there for Foundation funds?
The BEF is recognized under state and federal law as a 501(c)3 charitable, tax-exempt organization. The Board of Directors carefully oversees donations and grants as stewards of BEF resources. These financial records are open to public review.
Does the Foundation compete with the PTA, booster clubs and other groups for financial support?
No. Such groups have valid, specific purposes within the public schools and solicit support for limited and special projects. The BEF seeks support from those interested in the broader aspects of education, in order to enhance the opportunities for students across the Bourne School District.
How can people in the community assist this effort?
Tax deductible contributions can be made by any individual, business or corporation. Individuals can also volunteer to help with BEF committees and fundraising efforts.
